IVF Medications



Diluted Lupron
Is a medication used about a week after ovulation to start the IVF fresh cycle. The medications control the cycle and prevent premature egg release. If it is given on day 2 or 3 of the cycle, it helps to produce additional folliclein the ovaries. Side effects include hot flashes or sweating; headache; mood changes; decreased desire for sex; acne; muscle pain or weakness; nausea or vomiting or change in breast size.

Baby Aspirin
The body may developantibodies to components of the blood-vessel wall called phospholipids. Baby aspirin stops these antibodies from blocking blood flow through small blood vessels in the placenta.

Antibiotics
This medication is taken to keep the patient clear of virus and infection. During the IVF cycle, side effects include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Bravelle (Urofollitropin)
This is a purified form of a naturally occurring hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). It is used to increase the development of follicles (eggs) and hormonal stimulation that is sufficient to make the follicle mature. Side effects include abdominal pain or swelling, breast tenderness or headache.

Menopur (Menotropins)
Usually mixed with Bravelle; it is a naturally occurring follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). It is used to stimulate the development of multiple eggs in female ovaries. Side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, back pain, dizziness or swelling.

Letrozole (Femara)
It  is the most recent addition to the drugs being used for fertility treatment. It can also be used to increase the chances of pregnancy in women who are already ovulating. This is known as superovulation. Side effects include hot flashes, headache, loss of appetite, weakness, nausea or diarrhea.

Ganirelix 
It is a man-made protein that inhibits the actions of the naturally-occurring hormone gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). It is used in follicle stimulating to develop multiple eggs for in-vitro fertilization. There are no known side effects.

HCG
This medication is administered by injection. The pituitary gland signals the last phase of egg maturation with the LH surge. To mimic the LH surge, HCG is used to fool the follicle and egg into continued maturation and ovulation. The egg is removed just prior to ovulation. HCG is the same hormone that home pregnancy tests contain to confirm a pregnancy.

Estrogen
It is a normal hormone that helps (with Progesterone) to prepare the lining of the uterus for the implantation of the fertilized embryo. Side effects include headaches, breast tenderness, minimal fluid retention and nausea.

Progesterone
It  is a hormone that is naturally released form the ovary during the first half of an ovulatory menstrual cycle. It is administered to prepare the lining of the uterus for a fertilized embryo and to support the ongoing pregnancy. Side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach upset or bloating.
